What is silk painting?
Silk painters use dye and resist to create colorful images. Similar to batik, the resist used in silk painting keeps colors from bleeding into each other and creates crisp lines. The artist first stretches and pins a piece of silk onto foam board, then draws lines with resist (a gooey white substance), adds color with a watercolor brush, and finally secures the colors through a steaming process. When the silk is soaked in warm water, the resist washes out leaving vibrant colors separated by white lines.
